Coaching has always been at the very heart of Pam's work - not only as a specific development tool when supporting others to grow and change, but also as a fundamental part of her own personal leadership style when working in operational roles.
"One of the toughest roles I have had was leading some 300 engineers through the massive change in the telecommunications industry when I worked with Nokia. First there was the change which came from massive growth, and then the change which came from consolidation. Change had to be delivered very quickly - at an organisation, process and behavioural level. The coaching skills which I had gained previously served me well. When the chips are down, you cannot force people to change, you can only help them see how it is possible. Then you support them through the change and challenge them to go further, think deeper, and explore all available options."
Now Pam works with senior executives from all sectors to help them push back their boundaries. She believes that in our personal and professional lives we keep fresh and alive by moving forwards. It is this energy and dynamism which also creates sustainable growth in our organisations.
"For me coaching is all about building a trusting and totally candid relationship between coach and client. I hope that through this relationship I am able to help my client to see things through fresh eyes (they invariably do that for me too!). Change can be difficult and personally challenging - it is sometimes easier for business leaders to turn to an external source for support than to seek it internally. I see this as a key part of my job."
Pam spent 20 years working at senior levels with large global corporations - Coopers & Lybrand, BAe Systems and Nokia. During this time her responsibilities spanned a wide range of HR, organisation development, management development and operational management and customer-facing roles. She left corporate life to work as a full-time coach in 2004 to follow her passion for helping people to grow. She also trained as a body psychotherapist and runs a small private therapy practice.
